(This is an updated version of an article first published on ABS-CBNnews.com on Feb. 20, 2014. I was at the UST that night to help mount TV Patrol’s live coverage from the university’s Plaza Mayor, where anchors Korina Sanchez and Noli De Castro came to receive awards. As we finished transmitting live footage of the event, I put together the winners and some quips from the recipients into a story that was e-mailed to base before my tech team left UST.)
ABS-CBN took home the most awards at the 10th USTv Students’ Choice Awards held at the University of Santo Tomas on Thursday.
The Kapamilya network was recognized by the Tomasian student leaders as their choice of TV network.
Its public service arm, the ABS-CBN Lingkod Kapamilya Foundation, Inc., was among those picked student leaders’ choice of network foundation.
ABS-CBN flagship newscast “TV Patrol” led the winners in the news and public affairs category as students’ choice of news program.
Anchors Noli De Castro and Korina Sanchez received the award, which “TV Patrol” also won in 2013.
“Sa araw-araw, gabi-gabi, binabalita lang namin ang nangyayari. Ang mga artista po diyan ay kung sino ang involved sa mga balita. Ang kinatutuwa po namin ay pinahahalagahan ninyo ang mga balita,” De Castro said.
“Kabayan” added that ABS-CBN’s commitment to report even sensitive and dangerous news stories and events is only limited by the news teams’ capability to cover them.
“Pag sinagot ng reporter pati cameraman “Kaya natin,’ sige, ibalita natin,” he said.
De Castro’s documentary on school children in far-flung areas entitled “Gusto Kong Mag-aral” won the students’ choice of documentary special.
Meanwhile, the “Senakulo” episode of Sanchez’s magazine show “Rated K” bagged the students’ choice award for Catholic feature.
“Kayo talaga ang dapat nagpapaalala sa amin na mga nakatatanda–pero hindi naman masyadong matanda–at sa mga propesyunal kung ano ang nararapat,” she said.
“Dapat talagang may pagbabalanse sa pagitan ng kung ano ang popular at kung ano ang nararapat.”
Food trip with Kris
TV host Kris Aquino personally received the students’ choice of magazine show award for her morning talk and travel show, “Kris TV.” Last year, Aquino won best talk show host at the USTv.
The students cheered as Aquino announced that she would pick two UST students to join her and Kris TV head writer Darla Sauler on a food trip around the España area for the show.
“Maraming, maraming salamat for watching us, for trusting us, for believing in us, and for giving us inspiration to do even better,” Aquino said.
Other ABS-CBN programs like “It’s Showtime,” “Be Careful With My Heart,” “Sports Unlimited,” “The Bottomline,” “The Voice of the Philippines,” and “Rooftop Prince” were also recognized.
Multi-media artist Toni Gonzaga scooped back-to-back students’ choice awards for reality/game show host in “The Voice” and for talk show host in “The Buzz”.
The USTv Awards, which debuted in 2005, is the first student-conferred competition for television shows and personalities in the country.
The winners are selected and voted on by the university’s 40,000-plus students based on their reflection of Catholic values.
With this year’s theme of “Makabuluhang telebisyon, hinuhubog ng kabataan ngayon,” the awards strengthen UST’s call for responsible television content.
It cut down the number of awards this year to focus only on television shows, initiatives, and personalities.
The USTv also modified the three-cylinder trophy award designed by former UST College of Fine Arts and Design dean Jaime de los Santos.
The new trophy now includes Catholic emblems like the rose of the Virgin Mary, the Dominican cross, and the sun to represent St. Thomas Aquinas.
